If you're not familiar with what an IP is, we'll put it in layperson's terms. Think of an IP address for your web site the same as you would consider your home address for yourself. Your home address identifies to the world where you are and how to reach you. An IP does the same for your web site.
What is the advantage of my own IP?
Many web hosting companies assign multiple web sites to the same IP address, much like multiple people sharing the same home address. Nothing wrong with that.
However, if your web site is at all dependent on receiving traffic from search engines, you could inadvertently place your site at risk of being banned by those SE's.
Here's how. If another site that is sharing the same address as your site gets banned by the search engines (for spamming, cloaking, or other methods of manipulating search results), it is the IP address that gets banned. Therefore all sites assigned to that IP are banned by default. Oh, you'll probably eventually get back in the engines. But why go through the headache?
